A mismatched outfit, a slightly defective denture, an exquisite mediocrity of the soul-those are the details that make a woman real, alive. The women you see on posters or in fashion magazines-the ones all the women try to imitate nowadays-how can they be attractive? They have no reality of their own; they're just the sum of a set of abstract rules. They aren't born of human bodies; they hatch ready-made from the computers." ~The Book of Laughter and Forgetting . About This Quote

The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, by Milan Kundera is a contemporary novel that addresses the problems of the post-1960s era. It is a satire on the concept of modernity, in which life is reduced to data and members of the society are alienated from one another. The novel's protagonist is Emil, who describes his life as “living between two worlds: one he shared with his family and friends; the other with his fellow employees.” Emil hopes that he can find a “third world” that would allow him to live in harmony with both sets of people. Part of the way to do this is through choosing a career: he has chosen to work at a computer company. Although Emil seems to be on the cusp of finding himself, he soon learns that what we perceive as “the third world” is nothing more than an illusion created by those who lack real knowledge about others.
